Newly Updated January 1999!. Potent Portables is a place dedicated to the NEC PC-8201A, a sister design of the Tandy Model 100 and the Tandy Model 102 laptops. If you have a NEC PC-8201A, the information and links presented here will help you get the most out of your classic laptop.

When the NEC was released to the public in the early 1980s, computer telecommunications most often meant calling bulletin board systems (BBS) using ASCII connections. The connections were either (1) bare-bones TTY with no embedded codes (2) "enhanced" by terminal control codes requiring VT terminal emulation or (3) "enhanced" by graphics control codes like ANSI. The NEC's built in TELCOM application is designed for option (1), the bare-bones TTY connection, although the NEC does understand a few terminal control codes in the form of escape sequences.

Choose one of the links below to get introductory material on TELCOM, technical reference info, and an example connection.
