Loading POWR-DOS from the TDD2 ------------------------------ A previous file deals with loading POWR-DOS from the TDD2. Here is a more flexible, and probably easier, approach. 1) Start with FLOPPY2 installed above 60000. Use it to load FREMEM.BA from the Utility Disk and PL.BA from the (TDD1) Acroatix distribution disk. 2) Use FREMEM.BA to zap FLOPPY2 from high memory. You will need that space. 3) Make the following change to Line 145(in my version) of PL.BA: Replace 'CLEAR 0,HIMEM+20' by 'CLEAR 0,HIMEM+20:SAVEM "PL.CO",HIMEM,62959,HIMEM:STOP' i.e., you add two statements. 4) With the POWR-DOS disk in a TDD1, run PL.BA and specify Powr-Dos (p) at the prompt. After a bit, you will get PL.CO on the menu. If you run PL.CO, you will install POWR-DOS in low memory, with all the usual prompts regarding what can be moved and what cannot. 5) In Basic, do CLEAR 256, MAXRAM and reinstall FLOPPY2 per the TDD2 manual. 6) Use FLOPPY2 to save PL.CO to a TDD2 disk. 7) Now, whenever you want to load POWR-DOS, load FREMEM.BA & PL.CO, use FREMEM to clear FLOPPY2, and load PL.CO and run it -- as you would any CO program. You no longer need the POWR-DOS diskette to install it; it's all in the file PL.CO! When you finish, PL.CO can be killed -- to be reloaded again when needed. This approach should load either POWR-DOS or TINY, but I've verified only the former. This will not give you POWR-DOS's sector modes -- since that aspect of the TDD2's ROM is different than that of the TDD1 (software like RECOVR.BA using that capability of PD may hang). Nor will it let you use all 40 file names. It may or may not give you the full 200K space in 40 files or less (LFILES does report 180 sectors free in an empty disk). But it will give you the POWR-DOS convenience of a DOS which sits low in RAM. Phil Wheeler -- 71266,125 9 July 1987
